1.Transformers: The Last Knight

Release Date: June 23, 2017

Starring: Mark Wahlberg, Anthony Hopkins, John Goodman
Director: Michael Bay

It’s impossible to ignore the Transformers movie franchise at this point, and although it’s not for everyone (myself included), it does belong on this list of the upcoming sci-fi movies this year. The Last Knight will star Mark Wahlberg, Anthony Hopkins and John Goodman, and it will circle around Optimus Prime returning after leaving Earth to search for the Creators. Big budget sci-fi isn’t for everyone, but if you’re into the Transformers franchise, you’ll want to check it out in theaters on June 23.

2. Ghost in the Shell

Release Date: March 31, 2017
Starring: Scarlett Johansson, Michael Wincott, Michael Pitt
Director: Rupert Sanders

Despite the controversy surrounding the Ghost in the Shell movie, it still looks like an interesting film from a sci-fi standpoint. I admittedly don’t know much about the source material of the same name, but I do know that it revolves around a cyborg policewoman (and in this movie, the cyborg is played by Scarlett Johansson). The one-of-a-kind human-cyborg hybrid leads a task force to take down dangerous extremist cyber criminals. Super cyberpunk vibes, and that’s enough to pique our interest, alone.

3. The Circle

Release Date: April 28, 2017
Starring: Emma Watson, Tom Hanks, Karen Gillan, John Boyega

The Circle is another sci-fi film generating a lot of early buzz. It will revolve around a woman who lands a job at a powerful tech company called the Circle, which links users’ personal emails, social media, banking and purchasing with their universal operating system, resulting in a new age of civility and transparency. It’s based on the international best-seller by Dave Eggers.

4. The Six Billion Dollar Man

Release Date: December 22, 2017
Starring: Mark Wahlberg

We can rebuild him. We have the technology. The film will star Mark Wahlberg as Steve Austin, a military officer who becomes part of a top-secret government program after a near-fatal accident. Using cutting-edge technology, he’s turned into the world’s first truly bionic man: better, stronger, faster. It’s based on the TV series of the same name. While we’re not much a fan of Mark Wahlberg, we realize we’re in the minority, and sci-fi lovers are going to be looking forward to this movie.

5. War for the Planet of the Apes

Release Date: July 14, 2017

Starring: Judy Greer, Woody Harrelson, Andy Serkis
Director: Matt Reeves

One of our most anticipated movies of 2017 is War of the Planet of the Apes, which will continue one of the best franchise reboots we’ve seen in Hollywood yet. In War, Caesar becomes embroiled in a battle with an army of humans. The first War of the Planet of the Apes trailer is definitely exciting, and we can’t wait to see who wins the war when the movie hits in Summer 2017.
