Alejandra Caraballo, affiliated with the Cyberlaw Clinic at Harvard Law School, had reported the account’s offensive content to X. However, the company initially responded by stating that the bill did not violate their safety policies after reviewing the available information.
On Monday, the San Bernardino County Sheriff’s Office revealed that the suspected killer, who was eventually killed in a confrontation with the police, had been using Platform X along with Gab, a platform known for its popularity among far-right extremists. The suspect’s X account featured a pinned tweet depicting a burning Pride Flag, alongside other content that promoted anti-LGBTQ and anti-Semitic sentiments. The account also contained posts denouncing the police and accusing them of engaging in “sociopathic schemes.”
The delayed response from Platform X regarding the suspension of the account has raised concerns about their commitment to combating hate speech and violent content on their platform. An inquiry from CNN prompted an auto-reply from the company, and approximately 30 minutes after CNN’s query, the account was suspended. This raises questions about whether the platform would have taken action without external pressure.
Elon Musk, the owner of Platform X, has recently overseen substantial staff reductions, including a significant number of employees from the compliance department. This has sparked debates about the company’s capacity to effectively moderate content and enforce safety policies.
