Washington, D.C — The White House announced on Tuesday that eight prominent technology companies, including Adobe, IBM, and Nvidia, have voluntarily committed to U.S. President Joe Biden’s artificial intelligence (AI) governance guidelines. These guidelines were initially introduced in July to ensure responsible AI development and utilization, with a particular focus on preventing AI’s misuse for destructive purposes. This latest round of commitments bolsters the collaborative effort between the government and the tech industry to shape the AI landscape.
In addition to Adobe (ADBE.O), IBM (IBM.N), and Nvidia (NVDA.O), the other five companies joining this initiative are Palantir (PLTR.N), Stability, Salesforce (CRM.N), Scale, and Cohere. Their commitment to these guidelines signifies their dedication to advancing the responsible and ethical use of AI technologies.
The primary objectives of President Biden’s AI guidelines include measures like watermarking AI-generated content, enhancing transparency in AI systems, and ensuring accountability for AI-related actions. White House chief of staff Jeff Zients emphasized the urgency of AI governance, stating, “The president has been clear: harness the benefits of AI, manage the risks, and move fast—very fast.” Zients further noted that the administration is committed to working closely with the private sector to expedite the implementation of these guidelines.
To promote collaboration and discussion on AI governance, several of the signatory companies were expected to participate in a meeting at the White House on Tuesday. Commerce Secretary Gina Raimondo and Chief of Staff Jeff Zients led this engagement with tech industry leaders.
These private commitments, while significant, are considered a temporary measure as Congress continues to deliberate on potential AI legislation. Although discussions have been ongoing, minimal progress has been made in enacting comprehensive AI-related laws. In tandem with these commitments, the White House has been crafting an executive order that focuses on AI, further signaling the government’s commitment to regulating AI technologies responsibly.
