OpenAI, the pioneering force behind ChatGPT and a key player in the artificial intelligence sector, has undergone a dramatic shakeup, leaving its future uncertain. The surprise announcement came as former Twitch CEO Emmett Shear was named interim CEO, following the abrupt ousting of Sam Altman. Altman, in turn, has found a new home at Microsoft (MSFT.O), adding complexity to the unfolding narrative.
The developments, finalized late on Sunday, put an end to speculation about Altman’s potential return to OpenAI. By Monday, the majority of OpenAI’s 700+ employees were reportedly on the brink of resigning, demanding the removal of the board and the reinstatement of Altman and former President Greg Brockman. The plea, seen by Reuters, was accompanied by a statement from OpenAI chief scientist Ilya Sutskever, expressing regret for his role in the board’s actions.

In an attempt to allay concerns of a collapse at OpenAI, Altman and Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella assured stakeholders that they were dedicated to ensuring the company’s continuity. Altman, in a social media post, highlighted that his primary focus was on OpenAI’s thriving future. Nadella, in a CNBC interview, extended an invitation for OpenAI staff to consider staying at OpenAI or joining Microsoft.
Microsoft, having invested significantly in OpenAI, is swiftly moving to retain key talent that may leave the startup. This includes co-founder Greg Brockman, who is among the notable names lured by Microsoft. The tech giant’s efforts aim to both stabilize OpenAI and prevent rival companies, such as Google and Amazon, from acquiring critical personnel.
