Twitter Considers Legal Action Against Meta Over Rival App Threads

In a fierce battle for social media dominance, Twitter is reportedly considering legal action against Meta, the parent company of Facebook, over its newly launched app called Threads. The app, which gained millions of users within a day of its launch, has been touted by Meta as a “friendly” alternative to Twitter. However, Twitter’s CEO Elon Musk has accused Meta of cheating, while Meta denies allegations that ex-Twitter employees played a role in developing Threads.

According to Meta, Threads has already amassed over 70 million users, whereas Twitter currently boasts an estimated 350 million users. Comparisons between the two platforms have revealed striking similarities, with BBC News technology reporter James Clayton noting that Threads shares a resemblance to Twitter in terms of its news feed and reposting features.

The possibility of legal action stems from Twitter’s claim that Meta unlawfully appropriated its trade secrets and other intellectual property to create Threads. In a letter sent by Twitter attorney Alex Spiro to Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg, Spiro accuses Meta of systematic and willful misappropriation of Twitter’s confidential information. The letter demands that Meta immediately cease using Twitter’s trade secrets and highly confidential information, and warns of potential civil remedies and injunctive relief.

Watch: Zuckerberg v Musk rivalry: ‘It’s game on’

To succeed in court, Twitter would need to prove that Meta infringed upon its intellectual property, such as programming code, as ideas themselves are not protected by US copyright law. However, Meta holds a patent from 2012 for “communicating a newsfeed,” the system that displays the latest posts on Facebook, which could complicate the legal battle.

Both Meta and Twitter have been contacted by BBC News for comment on the matter. Meta spokesperson Andy Stone denied the allegations, stating that no former Twitter employees are part of the Threads engineering team. Elon Musk, in response to the legal letter, emphasized that competition is acceptable but cheating is not.

The launch of Threads has sparked discussions about its potential impact on Twitter’s revenue and user base. Industry experts speculate that Threads could offer a “brand-safe environment” for Instagram advertisers and attract users who want to cross-post content easily. Sarah Kunst, managing director at venture capital firm Cleo Capital, believes Threads could experience steady user growth, although the initial surge could be attributed to curiosity and novelty.

The rivalry between Twitter and Meta has become evident, with Mark Zuckerberg breaking his 11-year Twitter silence to share a popular meme of two Spider-Man figures pointing at each other, symbolizing a standoff. Elon Musk also weighed in, stating that being criticized by strangers on Twitter is preferable to the “false happiness” of Instagram.

Notably, both Meta and Twitter have undergone significant layoffs this year, with Meta announcing a reduction of approximately 10,000 staff members and Twitter experiencing substantial job cuts following Elon Musk’s takeover.

The battle between Twitter and Meta over Threads is expected to intensify as the companies vie for users and strive to differentiate their platforms in the competitive social media landscape.

In the fiercely competitive social media landscape, the launch of Threads by Meta has raised questions about its potential to disrupt Twitter’s position and attract a significant user base. While Twitter CEO Linda Yaccarino tweeted that their platform is “often imitated” but “can never be duplicated,” the rapid growth of Threads has caught the attention of industry experts.

Sarah Kunst, the managing director at venture capital firm Cleo Capital, spoke about the potential impact of Threads on Instagram advertisers. She noted that Threads could provide a “brand-safe environment” for advertisers who are looking to allocate their budget and explore new opportunities. With its easy cross-posting capabilities to other platforms like Instagram, Threads may appeal to influencers and advertisers seeking to diversify their reach.

The initial surge of 30 million users on Threads could be attributed to the curiosity surrounding a new platform. However, Kunst believes that Threads will likely experience a steady increase in users, given its ease of use and integrations with other popular social media platforms.

The rivalry between Twitter and Meta has become increasingly apparent, with both Elon Musk and Mark Zuckerberg acknowledging the competition. Zuckerberg broke his Twitter silence of over 11 years to share a meme illustrating the standoff between the two platforms. Musk, on the other hand, emphasized the preference for being criticized by strangers on Twitter rather than indulging in the “false happiness” of Instagram.

Both Twitter and Meta have faced significant restructuring and layoffs this year. Meta announced plans to cut approximately 10,000 jobs, while Twitter experienced substantial staff reductions following Musk’s takeover last October.

As the battle for users and market share intensifies, the potential legal action threatened by Twitter against Meta adds another layer to the ongoing rivalry. Whether Twitter can successfully prove that Meta infringed upon its intellectual property remains to be seen, but the implications of this legal dispute could have far-reaching consequences for both companies.

In the evolving landscape of social media, where platforms are constantly striving to innovate and differentiate themselves, Threads has emerged as a strong contender to challenge Twitter’s dominance. The coming months will reveal whether Threads can sustain its initial success and pose a significant threat to Twitter’s user base and revenue streams.
