Apple Inc. is set to release a software update for iPhone 12 users in France, following the suspension of iPhone 12 sales in the country due to concerns raised by French regulators over radiation levels. The move comes after France’s National Frequency Agency (ANFR) ordered the immediate withdrawal of the iPhone 12 from the French market, asserting that it exceeded European radiation exposure limits.
An Apple spokesperson confirmed the forthcoming update, stating, “We will issue a software update for users in France to accommodate the protocol used by French regulators. We look forward to the iPhone 12 continuing to be available in France.” The company emphasized that the suspension of sales was attributed to a specific testing protocol utilized by French regulators and not to any safety concerns.
The ANFR, responsible for regulating electromagnetic emissions in France, deemed the iPhone 12 non-compliant with European radiation exposure limits and ruled that corrective measures must be implemented for iPhone 12 devices already in use, or a recall would be necessary.
Apple responded by asserting, “Since it was introduced in 2020, the iPhone 12 has been certified and recognized as meeting or exceeding all applicable SAR (Specific Absorption Rate) regulations and standards around the world.” SAR measures the rate of energy absorption by the body from the source being measured, according to the French regulator.
France’s Minister for the Digital Economy, Jean-Noel Barrot, took to social media to share the latest developments. In a post on X, formerly known as Twitter, he stated, “After discussions and as requested by the ANFR, Apple has assured me that it will be rolling out an update for the iPhone 12 in the next few days.”
The update will undergo rapid testing by the French regulator, with the goal of aligning the iPhone 12 with European standards applicable in France. Once the update is approved, Apple will be permitted to resume iPhone 12 sales in the country.
It’s worth noting that this suspension of iPhone 12 sales in France coincided with Apple’s unveiling of its latest models, the iPhone 15 and iPhone 15 Pro, during its annual keynote event held in California.
