After a two-year suspension, YouTube has reinstated former US President Donald Trump’s Banned YouTube channel on its video-sharing platform. This decision comes after similar moves taken by Meta, the parent company of Facebook and Instagram, and Twitter, owned by Elon Musk. Trump’s YouTube account was banned in January 2021, with the company citing a violation of its rules related to inciting violence.

YouTube’s press account has confirmed that Trump’s account is now back online. In a tweet, the Google-owned platform stated that the “Donald J. Trump channel is no longer restricted and can upload new content.” However, the account remains subject to YouTube’s policies, like any other channel on the platform. YouTube evaluated the risks of real-world violence before making the decision to lift the ban, balancing it with the need for voters to hear from major national candidates before an election.

In the wake of the Capitol Hill riots in Washington DC on January 6, 2021, YouTube banned Mr. Trump from posting videos on its platform. Following that, Facebook, Instagram, and Twitter also suspended his accounts. In response, Mr. Trump launched his own social media platform, Truth Social. However, after announcing his candidacy for the US presidency in 2024, his accounts on all of these platforms have returned.

Trump has a significant following on social media, with 2.6 million subscribers on YouTube, 87 million followers on Twitter, 34 million on Facebook, and 23 million on Instagram. While his return to YouTube is good news for his supporters, he is not guaranteed to start posting videos on the platform. Nonetheless, he recently posted a short video of his 2016 victory speech on Facebook and declared, “I’M BACK!” after being absent from the platform for over two years.

The reinstatement of Trump’s social media accounts has garnered mixed reactions from the public. Some see it as a step towards restoring free speech, while others believe it could incite more violence and division.

In response to the reinstatement of Trump’s accounts, some critics have called for more stringent regulations on social media platforms to prevent hate speech and misinformation from spreading. Others argue that private companies should not have the power to decide who can and cannot use their platforms.

This move also raises questions about the role of social media in politics and elections. Social media platforms have become crucial tools for political campaigns, and the power they wield in shaping public opinion has become a cause for concern for many.

The decision to reinstate Trump’s accounts highlights the challenges faced by social media companies in balancing the need to ensure a safe online environment with the principles of free speech and political neutrality.

As the 2024 US presidential election approaches, the role of social media in shaping public opinion and influencing the outcome of the election will continue to be a topic of debate.
