OpenAI, the renowned artificial intelligence lab, made significant announcements at its first developer conference held in San Francisco. CEO Sam Altman unveiled updates that aim to leverage the widespread popularity of ChatGPT and offer incentives to developers to enhance its ecosystem.

At the event, which drew 900 developers from around the world, OpenAI introduced a feature that allows ChatGPT users to create custom bots tailored for specific tasks. This new functionality is set to enhance the versatility and utility of ChatGPT. Additionally, OpenAI reduced the costs associated with more powerful models, catering to the needs of developers and making advanced AI accessible to a broader audience.

ChatGPT, launched in November 2022, has already garnered an impressive user base of 100 million weekly active users, according to Altman.

OpenAI is also striving to introduce AI agent-like features that can autonomously handle personal and work-related tasks when directed by a human, with minimal oversight. In this endeavor, the organization will unveil the GPT Store later this month. This platform will allow individuals to share their GPTs, which are OpenAI’s versions of agents capable of booking flights and performing various tasks. Users can earn money based on the number of individuals utilizing their GPTs.

In a blog post, OpenAI expressed its vision for the future of AI, stating, “GPTs will continue to get more useful and smarter, and you’ll eventually be able to let them take on real tasks in the real world.” However, the organization emphasized the importance of moving incrementally towards this future, recognizing the need for meticulous technical and safety work and time for society to adapt to these advancements.

Even before the official check-in time at 8:30 a.m., hundreds of eager developers had already formed a long line around the block in San Francisco’s Mid-Market neighborhood. Most of them were already utilizing OpenAI technology and eagerly awaited the updates.

For OpenAI’s 2 million developers, the organization announced the launch of a new GPT-4 Turbo model, significantly reducing the cost by over 50%. Furthermore, OpenAI introduced assistant application programming interfaces (APIs) that encompass vision and image modalities, confirming an earlier Reuters report. In addition, a beta program was unveiled, enabling developers to fine-tune GPT-4 models.

OpenAI’s overarching goal is to encourage more enterprises and developers to create models that can compete with those developed by entities such as Anthropic and Alphabet’s Google, as well as open-source models like Meta’s Llama. Notably, OpenAI is also vying for enterprise customers with its primary backer, Microsoft.

To address concerns related to data and pricing for larger enterprises, OpenAI launched its Custom Models program. This program offers a dedicated team of researchers who specialize in training custom GPT-4 models for enterprises. Furthermore, OpenAI has committed to covering any legal costs incurred by claims of copyright infringement for enterprise users, aligning with similar offers from Google and Microsoft.

OpenAI’s developer conference marks a significant step in the organization’s efforts to empower developers, expand the capabilities of AI, and foster innovation in the field of artificial intelligence.
