OpenAI, the pioneering force behind ChatGPT and a key player in the artificial intelligence sector, has undergone a dramatic shakeup, leaving its future uncertain. The surprise announcement came as former Twitch CEO Emmett Shear was named interim CEO, following the abrupt ousting of Sam Altman. Altman, in turn, has found a new home at Microsoft (MSFT.O), adding complexity to the unfolding narrative.

The developments, finalized late on Sunday, put an end to speculation about Altman’s potential return to OpenAI. By Monday, the majority of OpenAI’s 700+ employees were reportedly on the brink of resigning, demanding the removal of the board and the reinstatement of Altman and former President Greg Brockman. The plea, seen by Reuters, was accompanied by a statement from OpenAI chief scientist Ilya Sutskever, expressing regret for his role in the board’s actions.

In an attempt to allay concerns of a collapse at OpenAI, Altman and Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella assured stakeholders that they were dedicated to ensuring the company’s continuity. Altman, in a social media post, highlighted that his primary focus was on OpenAI’s thriving future. Nadella, in a CNBC interview, extended an invitation for OpenAI staff to consider staying at OpenAI or joining Microsoft.

Microsoft, having invested significantly in OpenAI, is swiftly moving to retain key talent that may leave the startup. This includes co-founder Greg Brockman, who is among the notable names lured by Microsoft. The tech giant’s efforts aim to both stabilize OpenAI and prevent rival companies, such as Google and Amazon, from acquiring critical personnel.

Emmett Shear, OpenAI’s new interim head, dispelled speculations about Altman’s departure being linked to AI model safety concerns. Shear pledged to conduct an investigation into the firing, explore new governance models, and continue OpenAI’s mission of making cutting-edge technology accessible.

The internal turmoil leading to Altman’s dismissal was attributed to a “breakdown of communications,” as per an internal memo seen by Reuters. Reports suggest that OpenAI’s board had considered Anthropic’s CEO as a potential replacement for Altman, with discussions about a potential merger between the two AI startups. However, Anthropic’s CEO, Dario Amodei, declined the offer.

The nonprofit structure governing OpenAI has faced criticism from employees, leading to a call for the resignation of the existing board and the appointment of new independent directors. Employees voiced their concerns, stating, “Your actions have made it obvious that you are incapable of overseeing OpenAI.” Microsoft has assured these employees of positions within its subsidiary if they choose to join.

The split among OpenAI employees over different ideals, specifically regarding the pace of AI development, has been evident for years. Some prioritize building artificial general intelligence (AGI) with safety precautions, while others, particularly those joining after ChatGPT’s success, lean towards rapid product development.

As the dust settles, Shear, in his role as interim CEO, faces the challenging task of navigating OpenAI through this tumultuous period. The investigation into Altman’s ousting, the potential restructuring of governance, and the recruitment of new talent will all play pivotal roles in shaping OpenAI’s future trajectory.
