According to industry statistics released on Monday, South Korean users spent less time on Twitter than they did in the month before billionaire Elon Musk acquired the social media network in a $44 billion acquisition that was dogged by turmoil.

The average time a local user spent on Twitter was 43.94 minutes for the four weeks from Oct. 28 to Nov. 24, down from 45.9 minutes recorded a month earlier to the well-reported purchase, according to local data monitor Mobile Index.

However, there was a minor rise in the number of daily users at that time, maybe as a result of the Oct. 29 Itaewon Halloween crowd crush.

According to the statistics, there were an estimated 2.5 million Twitter users in Korea on average over the mentioned time period, an increase of 3 percent from the 2.43 million users during the preceding month.

There were around 2.69 million active users on Twitter the day following the tragic events in Itaewon. The amount was the most since data recording started in May 2020.

The Korean user data was just released after Musk boasted that new user signups are at an “all-time high” amid concerns over a large exodus of advertisers and users following his takeover. As of Nov. 15, user active minutes had reached a new high, increasing by 30% from the same week last year to an average of over 8 billion active minutes daily.

In the meantime, Musk has predicted that within the next 12 to 18 months, there will be more than 1 billion active Twitter users.
