Washington, D.C. – Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer has announced that a distinguished group of tech CEOs will participate in an upcoming artificial intelligence (AI) event scheduled for September 13. The event, which marks the first of nine sessions to be held this fall, aims to tackle crucial questions surrounding AI regulation, including worker protection, national security, copyright, and the prevention of “doomsday scenarios.” The gathering will provide a platform for industry leaders to engage with lawmakers and explore potential AI guardrails.

Among the prominent CEOs expected to attend are:

  • Eric Schmidt, former Google CEO
  • Mark Zuckerberg, CEO of Meta
  • Sam Altman, CEO of OpenAI
  • Satya Nadella, CEO of Microsoft
  • Jensen Huang, CEO of Nvidia
  • Elon Musk, CEO of X (formerly known as Twitter),

In addition to tech leaders, the event will also welcome representatives from civil society, including organizations advocating for workers’ rights, civil liberties, and the arts and entertainment industry. However, the event will not be open to the press.

These gatherings, christened “AI Insight Forums” by Schumer, serve as a platform for industry experts from the private sector to collaborate with U.S. lawmakers. The goal is to enhance lawmakers’ understanding of AI technologies before they embark on crafting regulatory frameworks for the industry.

Schumer has underscored the importance of a thoughtful and informed approach to AI regulation, encouraging his colleagues not to rush through legislation without a firm grasp of the technology’s fundamentals. Earlier in the summer, Schumer organized a series of closed-door briefings exclusively for senators, featuring AI experts and a groundbreaking classified briefing by U.S. national security officials on the implications of artificial intelligence.

As AI continues to shape various aspects of society, these forums are expected to play a pivotal role in fostering a nuanced and comprehensive approach to AI regulation that addresses the myriad challenges and opportunities presented by this rapidly evolving field. The event on September 13 is eagerly anticipated as a critical step in this ongoing dialogue between tech leaders and policymakers.
