Twitter Inc experienced a significant outage on Wednesday, preventing tens of thousands of users worldwide from accessing or using the popular social media platform’s key features.

At the peak of the disruption, Downdetector, a website that tracks outages using a variety of sources including user reports, reported more than 10,000 affected users from the United States, about 2,500 from Japan, and about 2,500 from the United Kingdom.

According to the website, reports of Twitter outages had dropped dramatically by Wednesday evening.

Twitter did not respond immediately to a request for comment. The status page of the social network indicates that all systems are operational.

Some users were unable to access their Twitter accounts via desktops or laptops during the outage. The problem also affected the mobile app and its features, such as notifications.

Others took to Twitter to share updates and memes about the service outage, with the hashtag #TwitterDown trending on the social media site.

Some attempts to log in to Twitter from the desktop resulted in the following error message: “Something went wrong, but don’t worry because it wasn’t your fault. Let us try once more.”

Twitter CEO Elon Musk tweeted that he could still use the service.

“Works for me,” Musk replied to a user who asked if Twitter was down.

The outage comes two months after Musk’s $44 billion takeover of Twitter, which has been marred by turmoil and dispute.

According to some estimates, hundreds of Twitter employees left the social media company in November, including engineers responsible for bug fixes and service outages.

Outages have also afflicted other major technology companies this year. In July, millions of Canadians lost access to banking, transportation, and government services due to a nearly 19-hour service outage at Canada’s largest telecom operator, Rogers Telecommunications.
