In a bid to assuage concerns over data privacy and potential Chinese state surveillance, TikTok has launched its inaugural European data centre in Dublin. This move comes as the social media giant, owned by Chinese firm ByteDance, seeks to reinforce its commitment to safeguarding European users’ data.
TikTok has emphasized its dedication to protecting user data, asserting that it has never provided data to the Chinese government. European security officials have long been apprehensive about the possibility of the Chinese state gaining access to user data via TikTok, prompting bans on the app’s use within certain government bodies.
To address these concerns, TikTok is now storing European user data locally, with one data centre already operational in Dublin and plans for two more in Ireland and Norway’s Hamar region. Over 150 million European users’ data will flow through these secure centres.
Project Clover and Independent Auditing
TikTok has initiated “Project Clover” to oversee these privacy-enhancing efforts. The project draws its name from the pivotal role played by Ireland in facilitating the secure storage of TikTok data. Parallel to this, TikTok introduced “Project Texas” in 2020, outlining similar measures to US lawmakers.
To bolster the credibility of its privacy initiatives, TikTok has granted access to NCC Group, a European cybersecurity firm, for independent auditing. NCC Group will scrutinize TikTok‘s data controls and promptly report any security incidents. The partnership seeks to assure users that TikTok is taking robust steps to secure their data.
Independent Security Oversight
Stephen Bailey, Global Director of Privacy at NCC Group, expressed pride in being chosen as TikTok’s third-party security provider. He emphasized NCC Group’s objective scrutiny, monitoring, and assurance efforts, which will augment TikTok’s data security standards, surpassing European regulatory requirements.
NCC Group’s role will encompass identifying and responding to any “suspicious or anomalous access attempts,” ultimately enhancing TikTok’s overall security infrastructure.
In the upcoming months, TikTok and NCC Group will collaborate with European policymakers to provide insights into the practical application of these enhanced data security measures, fostering greater transparency and user confidence.
