BERLIN (TechGenez) – Germany’s engineering association VDMA has urged the European Union to place humanoid robotics at the top of its political agenda and build resilient domestic supply chains for the critical components needed to produce these advanced robots.
The call comes as the global race for leadership in humanoid robotics intensifies, with shipments nearly quadrupling in the first half of 2026 to 19,100 units and Chinese manufacturers dominating the market.
VDMA Deputy Executive Director Hartmut Rauen said the organisation believes that without strong European production of key parts, the continent risks falling behind in this fast-growing technology.
“The crucial challenge lies in scaling,” Rauen said. “Germany and Europe must establish a comprehensive value chain featuring domestic production of critical components.”
The Global Race and Europe’s Position
The VDMA highlighted that humanoid robots are moving from novelty to a strategic priority. The association argues that Europe must create its own ecosystem of suppliers, manufacturers and skilled workers to ensure long-term competitiveness and security of supply.
Rauen pointed out that the technology is no longer just about hardware but about building entire ecosystems of robotics, software and supporting industries. Without domestic production of sensors, actuators, batteries and control systems, Europe cannot fully control the supply chain or innovate at the pace required.
China’s Dominance and the Need for Alternatives
Chinese companies, led by Unitree, have been driving the surge in shipments. The VDMA warned that unchecked Chinese dominance could leave Europe dependent on foreign suppliers for the most advanced components.
The association believes that a strong European supply chain would allow the continent to attract investment, create high-quality jobs and maintain technological sovereignty in robotics.

The VDMA’s call is expected to influence upcoming EU policy discussions on industrial strategy and strategic autonomy. The organisation has already begun working with member companies to map critical components and identify gaps in Europe’s current supply chain.
