To enhance the online shopping experience, this innovative feature aims to expedite the process of evaluating products by distilling the collective sentiment of customer reviews.

Navigating through numerous product reviews to make an informed purchase decision can be an arduous task, especially when faced with a deluge of feedback. In response to this challenge, Amazon has introduced a generative AI capability that distills the essence of product reviews into succinct summaries.

The company initiated testing of this feature earlier this year. Its objective is to empower shoppers to swiftly grasp the consensus among fellow buyers who have penned reviews. This feature selectively extracts recurring themes from reviews and encapsulates them in a brief paragraph on the product’s detail page.

In a blog post, Amazon stated, “We want to make it even easier for customers to understand the common themes across reviews, and with the recent advancements in generative AI, we believe we have the technical means to address this long-standing customer need.”

The AI-driven summaries will manifest as concise paragraphs on product detail pages. Furthermore, users can interact with the feature by clicking or tapping on specific “product attributes.” For instance, users can select attributes like “ease of use,” and the AI will present reviews mentioning this particular aspect.

At present, this feature is accessible to a subset of mobile shoppers in the US, encompassing a diverse range of products. Amazon envisions expanding the availability of this tool to more users in the coming months, contingent upon the feedback received.

Amazon joins the league of tech giants embracing AI integration into their offerings. Although Amazon has not unveiled a high-profile AI chatbot or imaging tool, the company has been dedicated to facilitating developers in constructing their generative AI tools via its cloud infrastructure, AWS.

Amazon’s enthusiasm for generative AI was underscored by CEO Andy Jassy in a shareholder letter earlier this year, where he described it as a “big deal” for the company. During an earnings call with investors, Jassy further reiterated that virtually all of Amazon’s business sectors are currently engaged in multiple generative AI endeavors. This includes its devices unit, responsible for products such as the voice-activated assistant Alexa.

As Amazon continues to augment its customer-centric services through cutting-edge AI applications, the implementation of generative AI summaries for product reviews signifies another step towards streamlining the shopping journey for its vast user base.
