Samsung has officially released its latest folding phones, the Z Fold 5 and Z Flip 5, which come with incremental improvements over their predecessors. The new devices feature a Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 chip and an improved hinge but largely maintain the same specifications as last year’s models. Despite the lack of major changes, these phones are still strong contenders for consumers seeking cutting-edge folding devices.
The Z Flip 5 introduces a larger outside screen, a significant upgrade compared to its predecessor. The new 3.4-inch Flex window on the outside enhances the user experience and offers greater functionality. Additionally, the device boasts a new and improved hinge that folds completely flat and has a smaller crease, contributing to a sleeker design.
Meanwhile, the Z Fold 5 sports a brighter inside display, capable of reaching up to 1,750 nits, providing users with a more vivid and immersive viewing experience. The S Pen has also transformed, now 40% thinner, making it more convenient for note-taking and creative tasks.
However, the devices maintain the same shape, dimensions, aspect ratios, cameras, and batteries as their predecessors, leaving some users hoping for more significant upgrades disappointed. Furthermore, the under-display selfie camera and battery capacity remain unchanged, and there is no improvement in S Pen storage.
In terms of design, both phones are covered with Gorilla Glass Victus 2 on the front and back, offering enhanced durability and protection. The Z Fold 5’s thinner and more durable hinge contributes to a smoother folding experience and a more seamless form factor.
Despite the incremental updates, Samsung remains committed to its two form factors: the Flip and the Fold. The company appears to have shifted towards a more cautious approach in its product lineup, choosing to refine existing models rather than introducing drastic changes. In the past, Samsung was known for experimenting with various designs, but it now seems to have settled on its current form factors.
Critics have noted that the outside cover screen of both devices still feels somewhat unnatural and that the tall display on the Z Flip 5 has an awkward shape. Additionally, the back cameras and under-display selfie cameras have not seen any improvements from last year’s models.
Apart from the new phones, Samsung also announced incremental improvements in their watches and tablets, signaling the company’s focus on refining and enhancing its existing product offerings.
While the Z Fold 5 and Z Flip 5 may not bring revolutionary changes to the table, they still present compelling options for those interested in owning cutting-edge folding devices. As folding technology continues to advance, consumers can expect even more refined and innovative iterations in the future.
