WhatsApp, a subsidiary of Meta, has announced plans to introduce credit card payments and integrate services from rival digital payment providers within its app in India. This strategic move represents WhatsApp’s latest effort to bolster its commerce offerings in India, the company’s largest market.
WhatsApp boasts an extensive user base of over 500 million individuals in India, although regulatory constraints limit its in-app WhatsApp Pay service to just 100 million users.
Previously, individuals shopping on WhatsApp could make payments through popular services such as Google Pay, Paytm, and PhonePe, albeit after being redirected outside the WhatsApp app. However, Meta has unveiled plans to enable payments through these rival services, as well as any other services operating on India’s instant money transfer system UPI, directly within the WhatsApp platform. Additionally, new in-app options for credit and debit card payments will be made available.
Meta’s CEO, Mark Zuckerberg, has articulated a vision of business messaging becoming a significant driver of the company’s sales growth, especially in the face of pressures on Meta’s core advertising business and its metaverse initiatives.
While the user cap for WhatsApp Pay in India will persist, there will be no such restrictions on the number of users engaging in transactions with businesses on WhatsApp using these newly integrated payment methods, according to a spokesperson from Meta.
Given that approximately 300 million people conduct transactions worth about $180 billion each month via India’s UPI system, these enhanced transaction capabilities could be a compelling incentive for businesses to consider Meta’s offerings for direct access to WhatsApp users.
Until now, WhatsApp’s foray into end-to-end shopping experiences in India was primarily confined to pilot programs, including partnerships with JioMart, an online grocery service led by billionaire Mukesh Ambani, as well as metro systems in the cities of Chennai and Bengaluru.
Going forward, the expanded payment tools will be accessible to any company in India leveraging WhatsApp’s business platform, which predominantly serves large enterprises, as outlined in a Meta blog post.
Furthermore, Meta is extending its Meta Verified subscription program to businesses globally, offering them a means to authenticate their identity and elevate their content in users’ feeds. Initially, monthly subscriptions will be available on Instagram and Facebook in select countries, with WhatsApp set to join at a later date. The cost for this service will be $21.99 per Facebook page or Instagram account, or $34.99 for both, as stated in the blog post.
