In a striking move, Twitter, the popular social media platform, has officially rebranded itself as X. As a symbolic departure from its past identity, the company’s owner, Elon Musk, has initiated a massive garage sale to cleanse the remnants of Twitter’s history from its headquarters.
The auction catalog boasts an eclectic array of items, ranging from the ordinary to the extraordinary. Among the items up for bidding are standard desk chairs, a one-of-a-kind birdcage featuring a bird-shaped iconic Twitter logo, and a diverse assortment of other objects.
Since Elon Musk’s acquisition of Twitter less than a year ago, he has embarked on a journey to overhaul the platform. This process has entailed substantial changes, including significant layoffs of the company’s workforce, the introduction of a paywall, and the removal of most account authentication requirements.
Prospective buyers intrigued by this unique opportunity will find themselves presented with an array of intriguing options. The auction inventory includes sculptures resembling the Twitter logo, paintings depicting memorable moments such as Ellen DeGeneres’ viral 2014 Oscar selfie and Barack Obama celebrating his reelection, a meticulously reconstructed barn sourced from Montana, and a variety of musical instruments.
Alongside these more unconventional offerings, Twitter is also seeking to divest itself of office furnishings such as desks, chairs, and refrigerators.
The auction, overseen by Heritage Global Partners (HGP), is set to commence on September 12 and will span two days in San Francisco. Viewing arrangements are available by appointment only. The bidding for all 584 items will commence at a starting bid of 25 dollars.
It’s worth noting that Twitter had previously attempted a similar venture in January, auctioning off memorabilia and similar items from its past.
Both X and HGP have yet to provide an immediate response to CNN’s request for commentary on the upcoming auction. As this novel chapter unfolds for Twitter, the garage sale serves as an emblematic illustration of the dynamic changes underway in the company’s transition to its new identity under Elon Musk’s leadership.
