Russian-Made Missile — According to Poland, a “Russian-made” missile killed two persons when it struck the eastern town of Przewodow close to the Ukrainian border.
Following the landing of missiles in a community close to the Ukrainian border, two persons have died in Poland. There is no “conclusive proof,” according to Polish President Andrzej Duda, as to who was in charge despite initial claims linking the incident to Russian missiles.
Moscow has categorically denied involvement in the explosion, calling the allegations a “deliberate provocation aiming at escalation,” according to the defense ministry.
Global leaders met in Bali to address the issue outside of the G20 meeting, and US President Joe Biden claimed it was “unlikely” that the missile was launched from Russia. The explosion occurred as Russia conducted one of its heaviest missile barrages against Ukraine on Tuesday, days after being ordered to remove its forces from Kherson.
The NATO member state was not struck by Russian missiles, according to the Russian defense ministry.
According to Volodymyr Zelenskyy, president of Ukraine, Russia launched at least 85 missiles on Tuesday, most of which were aimed at energy infrastructure, including that in the western city of Lviv, which is close to the Polish border.
After investigations, if Russia was responsible for the missile strike, NATO will implement articles 4 and 5 of their constitution, but what are the articles?
What are Articles 4 and 5 of the NATO?
Article 4 of the NATO Treaty allows member nations to address a problem with their partners within the alliance and with the political decision-making body. The article states;
“The Parties will consult together whenever, in the opinion of any of them, the territorial integrity, political independence, or security of any of the Parties is threatened.”
It has been utilized seven times since NATO’s founding and serves as a precursor to Article 5. Following Russia’s invasion of Ukraine, a number of east European countries, notably Poland, sought discussions on February 24. Additionally, Turkey frequently referred to Article 4.
Article 5
“The Parties agree that an armed attack against one or more of them in Europe or North America shall be considered an attack against them all and consequently they agree that, if such an armed attack occurs, each of them, in the exercise of the right of individual or collective self-defense recognized by Article 51 of the Charter of the United Nations, will assist the Party or Parties so attacked by taking forthwith, individually and in concert with the other Parties, such action as it deems necessary, including the use of armed force, to restore and maintain the security of the North Atlantic area.
Any such armed attack and all measures taken as a result thereof shall immediately be reported to the Security Council. Such measures shall be terminated when the Security Council has taken the measures necessary to restore and maintain international peace and security”.
