SAN FRANCISCO (TechGenez) – Uber Technologies will lay off approximately 3,300 employees, or about 10% of its workforce, in its largest round of reductions since the COVID-19 pandemic.

The cuts are part of a broader effort to streamline the company and make faster decisions as robotaxis and other autonomous mobility technologies become more competitive with traditional ride-hailing.

In a note to employees on Wednesday, CEO Dara Khosrowshahi explained that the changes will flatten management layers that had accumulated during years of rapid growth. The goal, he said, is to create a leaner organisation with clearer ownership and faster decision-making.

    Reasons for the Cuts

Khosrowshahi said a leaner structure will allow the company to spend more time building new capabilities rather than coordinating across complex layers. The savings generated will be reinvested in growth, innovation, and the technologies that will matter most in the coming years.

Unlike some other tech leaders who have blamed AI for recent layoffs, Uber’s cuts are being driven by the need to adapt to intensifying competition, including from robotaxis and other autonomous mobility solutions.

The announcement comes as Uber continues to integrate its global ride-hailing and delivery businesses and invests heavily in self-driving technology through its partnership with Waymo and other initiatives.

    Impact on Workforce

The cuts will affect roughly 33,000 employees worldwide. The company did not provide details on which departments or regions will be impacted, but the changes are expected to simplify decision-making across the organisation.

Uber has a history of adjusting its workforce during periods of economic uncertainty, including major reductions during the pandemic. The current cuts represent the largest since that time.

    Outlook

The company says the changes will strengthen its ability to compete in a rapidly evolving mobility market. With robotaxis becoming more practical, Uber is focusing on developing its own autonomous solutions while also optimising its traditional ride-hailing operations.

Analysts expect the cuts to improve operational efficiency and free up resources for innovation, particularly in autonomous driving and urban mobility services.

    Conclusion

Uber’s decision to lay off 3,300 employees reflects the challenges the company faces as it navigates the transition toward autonomous mobility. By flattening management layers, the firm aims to make faster decisions and become more competitive in a market increasingly shaped by robotaxis and other new technologies.

The cuts come as Uber continues to invest heavily in its autonomous future while maintaining its core ride-hailing and delivery businesses.
